National Nylon Stocking Day

Each year on National Nylon Stocking Day, we highlight the fashionable variety and color available on National Nylon Stocking Day.

Many people may not recall ever hearing the term "nylon stockings" ever existed. A nylon stocking (also known as hose) is a close-fitting, highly elastic garment worn the same as socks or tights, with variations in color, style, and transparency.

Stockings made before the 1890s were made of woven cloth such as cotton, linen, wool, wool, or silk. Women's stockings were worn for warmth in the 1920s. Women began wearing stockings over their exposed legs as the hemlines of women's dresses increased in the 1920s. These 1920s stockings were simple, made first of silk or rayon, then nylon after 1940, and then nylon after 1940.

The introduction of nylon in 1939 by Chemical company DuPont in the United States sparked a high demand for stockings. Up to 4 million pairs would be sold each day as nylon stockings were cheap, durable, and shear.

The world war ii and beyond is fought in the world war ii and beyond

DuPont halted nylon stocking production and shifted its attention to the manufacture of parachutes, airplane cords, and rope as America entered World War II on February 11, 1942. This resulted in a mass shortage and a black market for stockings. DuPont revived production of the stockings at the end of World War II, but not enough demand in American stores led to nylon riots. DuPont was able to increase its output in time.

The first pantyhose made its appearance in the 1940s and 1950s. Stockings were sewn to actresses and dancers' briefs, as seen in popular films such as Daddy Long Legs. pantyhose did not need a garter belt to hold the stockings up unlike stockings.

Pantyhose were introduced in 1959, providing a quick alternative to stockings that resulted in a decrease in their sales. For the first time since, pantyhose sales in the United States exceeded stocking revenues in 1970, for the first time. Due to the newly invented hold-ups, pantyhose sales dropped slightly in 1987. However, they are still the most hosiery that can be purchased.
