National Zoo Lovers Day
National Zoo Lovers Day, each year on April 8th, encourages us to visit our local zoos. Thousands of people visit zoos each year to learn about the many animals that live there. Many of them also known as zoological parks, and many of them also function as breeding centers. These facilities are used to determine whether species are endangered or at risk of being endangered. They also provide information to the public about a large variety of animals and their habitats.
Have a fun-filled day by seeing your favorite animals swinging from the trees or splashing in the water.
A few zoo facts:
- The Vienna Zoo is the oldest operating zoo in Vienna, and it was opened to the public in 1765
- Central Park Zoo, New York's first zoo open to the public, opened in 1864
- The oldest zoo charter, which was established in 1859, is held at Philadelphia Zoo. In 1874, the first public was admitted to the public
- In the United States, there are 350 zoos
- Each year, approximately 175 million people visit a zoo
- More than 9.8 million annual visitors to Disney's Animal Kingdom have attended more than 9.8 million people
- Each year, more than 3.2 million people visit the San Diego Zoo
