National S’mores Day

On August 10th, National S'mores Day honors the most popular campfire treat. This gooey, toasted treat is adored by millions of people of all ages.

S'mores is made up of a roasted marshmallow with a layer of chocolate bar sandwiched between two pieces of graham cracker.

Alec Barnum, the entrepreneur, is believed to have invented this delectable snack. However, the first documented version of the recipe can be found in the Girl Scouts' 1927 publication Tramping and Trailing. Girl Scouts were not the first ones to make s'mores, but Girl Scout groups were still describing them in their reports as early as 1925, even though they weren't the first ones to make s'mores. "Some Mores" was the name given to older recipes in the cookbook. It's unclear when the word "mores" became the more common term.

Many variations of the original s'more find their way around a campfire today.

  • Try spreading peanut butter on the graham crackers before adding the other ingredients
  • In place of the chocolate bar, Subtute peanut butter cups were substituted by Subtute peanut butter cups
  • To make the graham crackers go, try fudge-dipped cookies
  • Add banana slices
