During the 1800s, Australia Day was often referred to as First Landing Day or Foundation Day. Captain Matthew Flinders, the continent's circumnavigator, recommended that it be named Australia in 1817. Governor Macquarie declared Australia Day an official public holiday one year later. The Australian colonies established the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. Australians officially became British subjects a year later, in 1984. They replaced God Save the Queen with Advance Australia Fair as their national anthem. In 1988, Sydney became the center of Australia Day activities.
